1996 BOYS STATE TRACK TEAM
1996 Boys State Track Team. Trendsetters. Athletes - Adam Haynes, T.K. Phelps,
Dan Kemp, Nick Fouts, Josh Keyes, Jon Justin, and David Martin. Coaches – Dennis
Dempsey, Bob Johnson, Jim Anderson, and Sally Taylor. The 1996 SHS track squad
finished 2nd at the State Championship Meet with a small but amazing group of
multi-talented individuals while also setting the trend for decades of track and field
excellence at SHS. SHS was moved up to the 3A level two years early after
reopening in 1992 and was looking for inspiration. The squad responded and
showed what a group of energetic, passionate, versatile, and inspired individuals
can accomplish. Adam Haynes won the 400 meter race. T.K. Phelps (HOF
Inductee 2017) won the high jump and placed 4th in the 110 meter hurdles. Dan
Kemp (HOF Inductee 2019) place third in the 3000 meters. The 4 x 100 meter
relay team (Josh Keyes, Jon Justin, Nick Fouts, and Adam Haynes) took 5th. During
the running of the 4 x 400 meter relay race to end the meet, the runners (Keyes,
Phelps, Fouts, and Haynes) knew that for the team to get 2nd overall, they had to
win the race – and that they did, beating the defending state champions and
shattering their school record. Not only did they each run their fastest splits of the
year, Fouts ran 2.5 seconds faster than his season’s best. The 4 x 400 meter relay
team finished first, and the team placed 2nd overall – Sister High School’s highest
finish ever. For his efforts on the track and in other sports, Nick Fouts also was
named SHS 1996 Athlete of the Year. A rich history of excellence was born and
continues to this day.
